The recording needle represents what we recognize as the present – constantly recording information into our past. The present, as we record it, starts to become a fleeting moment – a mental awareness of us recording our memories. This needle becomes a representation of our ‘realest’ perception of time. The recording tape we carry becomes all our memories. Mama’s needle is broken. Mama has been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for 10 years. As the disease progresses, Mama starts to lose her tape – the loss of her long term memory has been the most obvious of symptoms among several others. Mama isn’t presently conscious of this, however we are. The immediate characters in this story – Mami, tia Estela, Mildred, tia Miriam, Laura, Ely, Sklyah, Tio Maximo, tio Ezequiel, and tio Ramirez. Our recording needles are more present than ever as we start to desperately grasp onto the present, spending as much time with Mama as she begins to forget part of herself and we start to make her ever present in our memories. Physicists say time is an illusion with the future being an unmeasurable component while the past and present, though obviously inaccessible, become the only concepts that can be measured through our own memories. 01:23:38 +0000 Sharlotte Fondeur-Casas https://sharlottefondeur.com/Mi-Nina Mi Niña .project_footer, .project_title, {display:none;} [ PROJECT STATEMENT ]: Mi Niña is a fashion project that explores the sociological and anthropological ideas behind the sartorial relationship between mother and daughter. The project particularly looks at the tension and space that develops during the transition into adolescence and early adulthood in regards to personal clothing choices. Emphasis is placed on the influence this sartorial relationship has in forging identities in daughters during childhood and adolescence. I use my mother as the primary subject with pieces from her own closet. Appropriated c-prints from the 1990s of how my mother use to dress me are used as a point of reference and comparison. Collages for this project were created in collaboration with Chris Alfaro, a Mexican artist and good friend from Puebla who currently holds it down for her daughter and husband in Corona, Queens. Daniel’s father has been faintly present in his life since he left the family, when Daniel was 7, to create a new one. Now 14 years later, Daniel is aspiring to become a Corrections Officer at Riker’s Island just like his father. In the work, I attempt to permanently remove Daniel’s father from any (and all) of the family’s archive images. The permanent removal doesn’t indicate death but an emotional removal from Daniel’s life.
